Memo 1/2009 Travel Insurance - Outings and Day Trips

Groups have been asking for some time what cover, if any, the Fellowship’s central insurance policy gives for people going on trips and outings against death, personal injury or loss of possessions. The answer has been and still remains ‘none’.

Travel insurance is normally only available for travel that involves at least one over-night stay. However, as a result of negotiations by the Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS) with AXA Insurance UK plc, cover without an overnight stay can be arranged.

Cover is available on a ‘per trip’ basis at a cost of only £2.28 per person for a one day trip and provides the following benefits:

1 Luggage and Personal Money
Accidental loss of or damage to luggage and personal effects, money and travel tickets up to £1,500 (Single Trip). Up to £500 for any one article, up to £500 for all valuables and £250 for money.

2 Personal Accident
£12,500 for loss of a limb or an eye, £25,000 for permanent total disablement, up to £12,500 for death but only £1,000 if over 65.

3 Personal Liability
Personal liability for any damages you become legally liable to pay up to £1 million.

4 Legal Expenses
Up to £10,000 (Single Trip) for legal costs and expenses incurred in the pursuit of compensation for personal injury or death.

There are a number of exclusions or limitations, the main ones being:

• There would be some ‘excesses’ by which the insured party bears a usually small first part of any loss.

• No cover in respect of war risks, civil commotion and radioactive contamination, deliberate exposure to danger and influence of drugs or alcohol or criminal acts.

• No cover for sports equipment and protective clothing or for mobile telephones, spectacles, sunglasses, dentures or any other aids or appliances or for any loss not reported to the Police and supported by a Police report.

The organiser of a trip would need to contact CSIS for a quotation. This can be done by writing to:
The Civil Service Insurance Society
7 Colman House
King Street
Maidstone
Kent
ME14 1DD

Or through the website (www.csis.co.uk) or by e-mail to info@csis.co.uk or by telephone on 0845 60 77 444. After a quotation has been given and accepted, CSIS will need a list of the names and ages of the people to be covered.
If you have any questions or wish to receive full details of the policy cover please contact CSIS for clarification.
