Mike Baker CBE Mike began his Civil Service career in 1980 as a clerical officer for the Department for Work and Pensions in an inner-city office in Birmingham. Attendance at the Departmental Summer School at Kings College Cambridge expanded his horizons and inspired progression to leadership roles across project management, transformation and operational delivery. Mike was awarded MA (York) in Public Services Management in 2000. In 2011 he became Director and Head of Benefit Centres, leading 20,000 staff across benefit delivery and then in May 2012, he was appointed Operations Director for the Government’s flagship welfare reform programme, Universal Credit. In January 2016 Mike was appointed Director, Personal Tax Operations for HMRC, leading 14,000 colleagues and serving 50 million customers. In 2019 Mike left HMRC to take up the post of Transformation Director at the Ministry of Defence. Outside work, Mike enjoys most non-sedentary activity. He has qualified for his level 2 (UEFA B) FA coaching badge, coaching at a junior football club, and off the field, is Club Chairman. Mike was appointed CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2012. Mike was appointed as Chairman by the Cabinet Office in 2017.
