Deborah Fitzpatrick was appointed as Community Project Outreach Worker at Mycenae House & Gardens (Blackheath) last year. Since then she has been building on their previous good work in the community by putting together a programme of events for seniors in the local area.

We caught up with her recently and here’s what she had to say about their outreach schemes:

The outreach project is designed to prevent isolation and to help those that are vulnerable in our community

“We have developed an outreach project for seniors at Mycenae House & Gardens.  The outreach project is designed to prevent isolation and to help those that are vulnerable in our community. We want to engage seniors in activities and help with signposting to organisations that can give expert advice and information.

In terms of specific programmes; we have a weekly drop in cafe Thursdays 1-4pm for seniors.  Our wonderful ladies have been busy knitting for local charities.  It is a chance for seniors to get together to prevent isolation or just to have a cup of tea and a chat.  We now have a great established group - new seniors are welcome to drop in and see what we do and to meet us.

From 7th February until Easter our 'Men in Sheds' (Age UK Bromley & Greenwich) are back with us again!  This is an inspirational community project that gives men over 50 years of age somewhere to go that is safe, comfortable and a social environment.  The cost is just £1 including tea and biscuits.  This will take place Wednesdays 1pm - 3.30pm.  You do not have to be an expert woodworker, you simply need an interest and we can help you with the rest!

Also brand new to Mycenae House & Gardens 'Women in Sheds' - in response to numerous requests we are running a trial of 'Women in Sheds' which aims to help women over 50+ to meet and learn or share skills, help the community or just to have a chat over a cup of tea.  This will start 7th February 2018 until Easter from 10.30am-13:00 and the cost is the same as the men’s programme.

"when can we do it again?"

We had a wonderful 'Jolly Good Time' back in November - our main hall was packed with all having a good old fashioned sing song and watching old film clips.  It was a great day and we received so many comments such as "when can we do it again?"

Last year we organised an 'Info Fair'.  The hall again was busy with so many great local organisations drafted in to give advice and information for our seniors.  Some seniors had fire alarms tested and gained invaluable advice.

One last thing we’re particularly proud of is, with the help of our wonderful Bo Peeps on site nursery, we took some 2-3 year olds to our local care home.   The residents enjoyed the visit and interacted with the children.  It was such a fun time and it is beneficial to aid health and wellbeing for our seniors.  You could see the delight on the senior’s faces when interacting with games and storytelling.  We hope to run this as an ongoing project.

We are looking forward to developing new projects for our community and watch this space for more in the future”
